The Gift of Interpretation of Tongues: Understanding, Purpose, and Activation

Today, we examine the ninth gift of the Holy Spirit. The spiritual gift of Interpretation of Tongues, mentioned in 1 Corinthians 12:10, is one of the nine gifts given by the Holy Spirit for the building up of the church. This gift enables a person to interpret a language spoken through the gift of tongues, translating it into a language understood by others present. It’s not a word-for-word translation but rather an interpretation of the essence of what the Holy Spirit is conveying. This gift, though less commonly discussed today, carries a powerful purpose in unifying and edifying the body of Christ.

How Does the Gift Work?

The gift of interpretation accompanies the gift of speaking in tongues, making the divine message intelligible to everyone present, which brings understanding, edification, and encouragement to the congregation. In 1 Corinthians 14:13, Paul instructs, “Therefore, let him who speaks in a tongue pray that he may interpret.” Paul’s intention was that the entire church would be edified by hearing a message in their own language rather than listening to something they cannot understand. Paul emphasized the orderliness and purpose of this gift, encouraging believers to speak in tongues privately if no interpreter is available (1 Corinthians 14:28).

In public worship, when tongues are spoken without an interpretation, confusion may arise, which could deter unbelievers and create disorder. In 1 Corinthians 14:23, Paul mentions, “If, therefore, the whole church comes together and all speak in tongues, and outsiders or unbelievers enter, will they not say that you are out of your minds?” However, when there is interpretation, the message becomes clear, and God’s truth is revealed, benefiting both believers and unbelievers alike.

Biblical Examples of Interpretation

Although the gift of interpretation of tongues as seen in the New Testament doesn’t have direct Old Testament counterparts, we can see parallels in instances where God’s messages were interpreted or translated to make His words clear to others. One prominent example is found in the book of Daniel. Daniel interpreted divine messages for King Nebuchadnezzar (Daniel 2:47) and later for Belshazzar when mysterious writing appeared on the wall (Daniel 5:25-28). These interpretations were divine revelations intended to reveal God’s will and warn of coming judgments, much like the interpretation of tongues can reveal God’s truth and direction to His people.

In the New Testament, the Day of Pentecost serves as another example, where those present heard the apostles speaking in their native languages (Acts 2:6-11). Although this instance involved the supernatural ability to speak in various languages directly, it represents the principle of God using interpretable language to make His message known.

Modern Examples and Benefits of Interpretation of Tongues

While less commonly witnessed, the gift of interpretation is still active in various Pentecostal and charismatic communities. Testimonies from church meetings or prayer gatherings recount moments when one person spoke in tongues, and another felt a divine revelation, offering an interpretation that resonated with those present. For example, some church leaders recount situations in which a person speaking in tongues shared a message about God’s healing power, and the interpreter conveyed a sense of comfort and hope to those listening, leading to prayer for healing.

The interpretation of tongues can greatly enhance a believer’s spiritual life. It serves to strengthen the church by revealing God’s heart in real time, affirming His presence, and encouraging others. The Apostle Paul expressed a preference for intelligible words because they build up those who listen (1 Corinthians 14:19). When believers exercise the gift of interpretation, they contribute to an atmosphere of unity, understanding, and encouragement in the body of Christ. As we allow the Holy Spirit to move through these gifts, we grow in spiritual sensitivity and the capacity to hear and respond to God’s voice.

Encouragement to Use the Gift

The gift of interpretation of tongues, like all spiritual gifts, is given as the Holy Spirit wills for the profit of all (1 Corinthians 12:7-11). If you desire to operate in this gift, remember that God honors your willingness and will equip you for His purpose. Pray earnestly, ask for wisdom, and be attentive to the Spirit’s prompting during gatherings or private prayer. While the gift may not manifest in every moment, the willingness to be used by God is itself a powerful act of faith.

A Prayer for the Activation of the Gift of Interpretation

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the gifts You have given us through the Holy Spirit to build up the church and glorify Your name. Today, we ask for the activation of the gift of interpretation of tongues. Fill us with a sensitivity to Your Spirit so that we may clearly hear and interpret Your messages. Let Your words flow through us, bringing understanding, encouragement, and unity to Your people. Help us to be open vessels for Your purpose and to always seek Your heart above all else. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
