The Light Within

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.”
— 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NKJV)

Have you ever watched fireflies on a warm, dark evening? They do not fear the darkness. They do not struggle against it. They simply emit the light that God has placed within them, and the darker the night, the more brilliantly they shine. In many ways, the born-again believer is God’s spiritual firefly. We have been created to carry and emit the light of Christ into a world overshadowed by sin, confusion and despair. The darkness does not define us; it simply provides the backdrop against which His light is revealed.~

Every one of us longs for a fresh start.

The world offers many versions of reinvention. A new job. A new city. A new relationship. A new image. Yet none of these can change the deepest reality of the human heart.

The Gospel does something infinitely greater.

It makes us new.

Paul does not say that we become an improved version of our old selves. He says we become a new creation. The old order has passed away. God has brought into existence something that never existed before.

At the moment of the new birth, heaven’s life enters the human spirit. We are born, not merely of flesh, but of the Spirit (John 3:5–6). The very life of God is imparted to us. Peter describes us as “partakers of the divine nature” (2 Peter 1:4). This is the miracle of salvation.

The new creation is not simply forgiven.

The new creation is alive.

And where God’s life is present, God’s light is present.

When God began the first creation, His first recorded words were, “Let there be light” (Genesis 1:3). When He begins His new creation in us, He performs another miracle of light. Paul writes,

“For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.” (2 Corinthians 4:6)

The God who flooded the universe with light now floods the believer’s heart with the light of Christ.

This is why Jesus could declare,

“I am the light of the world.” (John 8:12)

Then, astonishingly, He turned to His disciples and said,

“You are the light of the world.” (Matthew 5:14)

Notice He did not say, “You should try to become light.”

He said, “You are.”

Light is now part of your new nature because Christ, the Light of the world, lives in you.

As believers, we are light-emitting beings. The Light of Christ dwells within us through the indwelling Holy Spirit. We carry His presence into dark places, and wherever truth overcomes deception, forgiveness replaces bitterness, hope triumphs over despair, purity confronts corruption, or love overcomes hatred, the light of Christ is being revealed through His people.

The moon has no light of its own; it merely reflects the light of the sun. We are different. We do not simply reflect Christ’s light from a distance. Because Christ lives within us, His very life shines through us. We do not manufacture this light through human effort. We emit what God has placed within us. The light is not ours—it is His. Yet it is His light in us that the world sees.

That is why Paul reminds us,

“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light.” (Ephesians 5:8)

Notice the change. He does not merely say we were in darkness. He says we were darkness. But now, through Christ, we are light in the Lord.

This is our new creation reality.

So today, refuse to see yourself through yesterday’s failures or today’s circumstances. See yourself through the finished work of Christ. You are born again. You have been made alive together with Christ (Ephesians 2:4–5). His Spirit dwells within you (Romans 8:11). His light shines in your heart. And wherever you go today, you carry the presence of the King.

The world does not simply need more intelligent people.

It needs men and women who know who they are in Christ and who quietly, faithfully and courageously allow His light to shine.

Today, be one of them.

Prayer

Father, thank You for making me a new creation in Christ. Thank You that the old has passed away and Your new life now lives within me. Let the light of Christ shine brightly through my thoughts, my words and my actions today. May I bring hope where there is despair, truth where there is confusion, and love where there is hatred. Help me to walk as a child of light and to reflect the beauty and glory of Jesus wherever I go. In His precious name, Amen.

Today’s Declaration

Today I declare that I am a new creation in Christ. The life of God is in me. The Spirit of God dwells within me. I am light in the Lord. The light of Christ shines through me. I will illuminate every place God sends me, and my life will reveal His glory. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
