Empowered By the Spirit – Part 3

“Behold, I send you the Promise of the Father…” – Luke 24:49

Imagine stepping into a dark room, and suddenly, it’s flooded with a brilliant light. This is what happens when the Holy Spirit enters the life of a believer. Just as light dispels darkness, the Spirit illuminates our hearts and minds, empowering us to become more like Jesus Christ.

This transformation is what I experienced on the day I became a born-again Christian. I grew up in a Christian family and went to church on special occasions, but I never truly encountered the God of the Bible. One beautiful evening, I was invited to a fellowship meeting by my then-girlfriend, who is now my wife. I went out of obligation, not any genuine interest. But that night changed everything.

As I sat through the Bible study, I noticed something remarkable. There was a light on the faces of the born-again Christians in the meeting—a glow that made them seem alive in a very special way. I felt a deep longing for this light because I knew I didn’t have it, and I wanted it. As the meeting came to a close, the gentleman leading the Bible study asked if I wanted to give my heart to Jesus. I asked him, “Is this Jesus the reason for your glow?” He looked a bit flustered and said, “I guess so.” I replied, “I want Jesus too.”

He led me through a simple prayer. As I closed my eyes and repeated the words, I felt something leave me, and simultaneously, a brilliant ball of light seemed to descend from the skies and enter me. It was so bright, it could blind your eyes. At that moment, I knew something profound had happened. I was filled with an exhilarating feeling, and my entire being tingled with vibrant life. I felt like a new person. When I opened my eyes, I saw that light even more clearly in others. That was the beginning of my journey with Jesus Christ. This is my born-again experience—the Light came into me.

The Holy Spirit’s work in a Christian’s life can be understood in three primary ways:

  1. He Transforms Our Character: The Holy Spirit lives within every believer, empowering us from the inside to become more like Jesus Christ. Through His power, we are sanctified—our sinful nature is gradually overcome, and our character is transformed to reflect the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23). As we yield to the Holy Spirit’s work within us, we are conformed to the image of Christ (Romans 8:29).
  2. He Guides Us in Our Christian Walk: Beyond transforming us, the Holy Spirit guides, counsels, and strengthens us through the ups and downs of life. He leads us into all truth (John 16:13), convicts us of sin (John 16:8), and intercedes for us when we don’t know how to pray (Romans 8:26-27). He provides the power, wisdom, and comfort we need to persevere in our faith and walk worthy of our calling (Ephesians 4:1).
  3. He Empowers Us for Ministry: The Holy Spirit also comes upon us to anoint and empower us for service in the Kingdom of God. On the day of Pentecost, the disciples were “filled with the Holy Spirit” and received power to be witnesses for Christ (Acts 1:8, 2:4). This baptism of the Holy Spirit equips us to manifest the gifts of the Spirit (1 Corinthians 12) and boldly proclaim the gospel, performing signs and wonders that demonstrate the power of God’s reign (Acts 4:31-33). His anointing enables us to fulfill our calling as Christ’s ambassadors in the world.

Ultimately, the Holy Spirit’s work in our lives is multifaceted. He transforms us from the inside out, guides us through life’s complexities, and empowers us for fruitful ministry. As we submit to His work, we find the grace and strength to live as Christ-followers and participate in God’s redemptive purposes in the world.

Invite the Holy Spirit into your life today!

Are You Born-Again?

Have you met the God of the Bible? Have you encountered His Holy Spirit? I would be delighted to lead you to Him today. Let’s pray together:

Father God, today I have heard about Jesus and the Holy Spirit. I greatly desire to be Yours and to have Your Holy Spirit living in me. I am a sinner, and I have done many bad things. Please forgive my sins. I believe Jesus came in the flesh, died on the cross for my sins, and rose from the dead to justify me. I put my trust in Him to save me. I confess Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. I ask Jesus to come into my life by His Spirit. Thank you for saving me. Please help me to walk with You for the rest of my earthly life and into eternity. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.
