Empowered By the Spirit – 10

Key Scripture: “Then the Spirit of the Lord will come upon you, and you will prophesy with them and be turned into another man.” 1 Samuel 10:6

The Greek word “exousia,” often translated as authority, carries profound implications in understanding how God exerts His power in the world. This concept of divine authority is crucial to recognizing how God can transform us and use us for His purposes.

Many years ago, during a short-term mission trip to Curaçao in the Netherlands Antilles, I experienced firsthand the power of God’s “exousia.” Our host arranged for us to visit a local radio station to share a message with the nation. I was asked to deliver a short word from the Lord. Without any prior planning, the Holy Spirit gave me utterance, and these words flowed from my mouth:

“There is a you in you that you know nothing about; but when you meet the One who created the you in you, then the you in you that you knew nothing about will be revealed to you and manifested in and through you!”

This revelation is beautifully encapsulated in Ephesians 2:10: “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.” Each of us is created with a divine purpose, and it is only through the Holy Spirit that this purpose is revealed and fulfilled in our lives.

The Transformative Power of God’s Authority

Today, let’s explore the conversion of Saul of Tarsus, who became the Apostle Paul. This is one of the most remarkable demonstrations of God’s “exousia.” Before his encounter with Christ, Saul was a fervent persecutor of Christians, believing he was defending the Jewish faith. His mission was one of violence and opposition to the followers of Jesus.

However, on the road to Damascus, everything changed. A blinding light from heaven surrounded Saul, and he heard the voice of Jesus saying, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?” (Acts 9:4). In that moment, Saul experienced the overwhelming authority of God, which shattered his former beliefs and transformed him completely. Struck blind, Saul was led into Damascus, where he spent three days in fasting and prayer. Through Ananias, God restored Saul’s sight and commissioned him as an apostle.

From that point forward, Saul—now Paul—became a powerful advocate for the very faith he once tried to destroy. Empowered by the “exousia” of Christ, Paul traveled far and wide, planting churches, preaching the gospel, and performing miracles through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Embracing God’s Call

Paul’s story is a powerful reminder of how God’s authority can radically alter the course of our lives. It demonstrates that no one is beyond the reach of God’s transforming power. When we submit to His authority, we, too, can experience a life-changing impact, fulfilling the unique callings He has placed upon us.

Remember

“There is a you in you that you know nothing about; but when you meet the One who created the you in you, then the you in you that you knew nothing about will be revealed to you and manifested in and through you!”

Let us pray: Father God, thank You for revealing Your purpose for my life. Through Your Holy Spirit, guide me to live fully in obedience to You. Like Paul, I may be misguided, but I ask that You transform me into the person You created me to be. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
