Empowered by the Spirit – 13

Key Scripture: Strengthened with might (Ischus) through His Spirit in the inner man.

Truth be told. When I started this series, I had no idea I would be doing many posts on this subject. I think I can say I am halfway through this. We have learnt three Greek words on God’s power and today I want to treat the fourth one. Ischus!

The concept of the “Ischus” power of God is a profound aspect of understanding the multifaceted nature of divine strength and authority. The Greek word “Ischus” (ἰσχύς) is often translated as “might” or “strength” and refers to the inherent power or force that enables someone to perform a particular task. It is distinct from other Greek terms used in the New Testament to describe God’s power, such as “Dunamis,” “Exousia,” and “Kratos,” each of which carries its own unique connotations.

Understanding Ischus Power:

“Ischus” refers to the physical and moral strength or ability that resides within a person, allowing them to carry out tasks or overcome challenges. It is the power to do something with inner strength, reflecting a robust, enduring capacity. In contrast, “Dunamis” often refers to the explosive, miraculous power of God, the dynamic force that enables miracles and supernatural events. “Exousia” speaks to the authority or right to act, while “Kratos” is often used to describe the manifested power or dominion, particularly the sovereign rule of God.

When we consider “Ischus” in the context of Jesus, we see it as the inner strength that enabled Him to carry out His earthly ministry. Jesus, empowered by the Holy Spirit, demonstrated Ischus in His endurance, His ability to withstand temptation, and His relentless commitment to fulfilling the Father’s will. It was this inner might that supported the other aspects of power (Dunamis, Exousia, and Kratos) in His life and ministry.

The Ischus Power in Jesus’ Ministry:

One vivid illustration of Ischus in Jesus’ life is found in His endurance during the crucifixion. While “Dunamis” was evident in His miracles and “Exousia” in His authoritative teaching, it was the “Ischus” power that sustained Him through the immense physical and emotional agony of the cross. The strength to bear the sins of the world, to stay true to His mission in the face of extreme suffering, reflects the Ischus power. In Ephesians 6:10, Paul encourages believers to “be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might (Ischus).” This strength is crucial for spiritual warfare, enabling believers to stand firm against the schemes of the devil.

Jesus’ Ischus was not just physical stamina, but a spiritual and moral fortitude that exemplified His unwavering commitment to God’s purpose. This is the same strength believers are called to walk in.

Walking in Ischus by the Presence of the Holy Spirit:

As believers, we are invited to walk in the same Ischus power through the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives. The Apostle Paul prays for the Ephesian church in Ephesians 3:16, asking that they be strengthened with might (Ischus) through His Spirit in the inner man. This indicates that Ischus is accessible to us, not by our own efforts, but by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.

To manifest Ischus in our lives, we must cultivate a deep relationship with the Holy Spirit. This involves daily surrender, reliance on His guidance, and a commitment to spiritual disciplines like prayer, fasting, and studying the Word. As we do so, the Holy Spirit imparts to us the inner strength necessary to endure trials, overcome temptations, and persist in God’s calling, just as Jesus did.

In moments of weakness, it is this Ischus power that allows us to say with the Apostle Paul, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13). It is not about our own ability, but about the strength provided by the Spirit that enables us to live victoriously.

Conclusion:

The Ischus power of God is a vital aspect of the Christian life, enabling believers to walk in the same inner strength that Jesus demonstrated. By relying on the Holy Spirit, we can access this divine might, empowering us to fulfill God’s purposes, endure challenges, and stand firm in our faith. Just as Jesus manifested Ischus in His life and ministry, so too can we walk in this strength, living out our calling with perseverance and power. As we continually draw from God’s strength, we reflect the truth of Isaiah 40:31: “But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.”

Let us Pray: Dear Lord, we echo Paul’s prayer for the church in Ephesus, the we will be strengthened with might through the Holy Spirit in the inner man. Lord strengthen us for all we have to do and all we have to go through. We ask this in Jesus name. Amen.
