Isaiah 11:2 – The Spirit of Wisdom

The Menorah gives us a beautiful template to access the sevenfold manifestations of the Holy Spirit as seen in the life of Jesus, the Messiah. Jesus declared, “I am the light of the world” (John 8:12), and the Menorah, a symbol of light and illumination, reflects His divine light. As Psalm 36:9 reminds us, “In Your light we see light.”
Yesterday, we explored the Spirit of Lordship. Today, we turn our focus to the second of these manifestations: the Spirit of Wisdom.
The Spirit of Wisdom
Scripture presents God as the ultimate source and giver of wisdom. As Job 28:27 and Proverbs 8:22-23 reveal, God employed wisdom as His master craftsman in creation. Psalm 104:24 declares, “O Lord, how manifold are Your works! In wisdom, You have made them all.” Similarly, Jeremiah 10:12 states, “He has made the earth by His power, He has established the world by His wisdom.” This divine wisdom is not limited to creation but also guides rulers in governing justly (1 Kings 3:28; Proverbs 8:15-16).
Wisdom in Hebrew is “Chochmah,” חָכמָה which signifies skill or the rightful application of knowledge. Proverbs 24:3 teaches us, “Through wisdom, a house is built.” This wisdom was present at creation, and it continues to be the foundation for building people, families, cities, nations, structures, and systems. In Exodus 35:30-31, we see Bezalel, filled with the Spirit of God in wisdom, understanding, knowledge, and all manner of workmanship, as a master craftsman for the Tabernacle.
To build successfully, one must possess the Spirit of Wisdom, which serves as a divine blueprint for all forms of construction—whether physical, relational, or spiritual.
The Wisdom of Jesus
From childhood, Jesus was filled with wisdom. Luke 2:40 tells us, “And the child grew and became strong; he was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was upon him.” His wisdom surpassed that of Solomon (Matthew 12:42) and left many marveling at His profound insights (Matthew 13:54, 22:22, 33, 46). As Paul eloquently expressed in Colossians 2:2-3, “In Christ are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.”
Teaching in Parables: Jesus skillfully used parables to communicate deep spiritual truths. The Parable of the Sower, for example, helps listeners examine their own hearts and encourages spiritual growth.
Handling Controversies: When questioned by the Pharisees about paying taxes to Caesar, Jesus responded with wisdom, “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s” (Mark 12:17). This response demonstrated the balance of civic responsibility and spiritual devotion.
Restoring Relationships: In the story of the woman caught in adultery (John 8:1-11), Jesus showed wisdom by balancing justice and mercy, urging her accusers to self-reflection and ultimately restoring her dignity with His words, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.”
Selecting Disciples: Jesus chose His disciples with discernment, recognizing their potential and diverse abilities. This reflects His wisdom in building a strong, unified community for His mission.
Miracle of the Loaves and Fishes: By feeding the 5,000 (John 6:1-14), Jesus demonstrated practical wisdom in resource management and organization, meeting both spiritual and physical needs, while highlighting His role as provider.
The Church: Jesus laid the foundation of the Church and continues to build it today. He calls leaders, empowers ministries, and intercedes for believers to fulfill their divine purposes.
Building with the Spirit of Wisdom
The Spirit of Wisdom is essential for building—whether it’s building our personal lives, communities, or the Body of Christ. We need this Spirit to guide us in decision-making, understanding Scripture, making wise choices, sharing the gospel, and, most importantly, in building others up. With this divine wisdom, we can create solutions for humanity’s problems, constructing systems and structures that reflect God’s glory. Just as Solomon’s Temple was a testimony to God’s wisdom, so too will our works testify to His Spirit working within us.
A Promise to Hold: God assures us in James 1:5, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.”
May the Spirit of Wisdom rest upon you today!
Let’s Pray: Father God, pour out the Spirit of Wisdom upon us. Enable us to build according to Your divine patterns through the power of the Holy Spirit. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
