Key Verse: Proverbs 24:3 “By wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established.”

The Majestic Menorah: A Symbol of Light and Life
The Menorah stands as a powerful symbol—not only of light but as a reflection of the Tree of Life. Its structure resembles a tree, reaching upwards, embodying the light with which we are to seek the face of God. In essence, the Menorah symbolizes Christ, for it is through Him that we truly see God. Hebrews 1:3 reminds us, “Who being the brightness of His glory, the express image of His person.” To behold God, we must first encounter Jesus Christ.
The Spirit of Understanding
Among the seven manifestations of the Holy Spirit represented by the seven lamps of the Menorah is the Spirit of Understanding, or בִּינָה (biynâ) in Hebrew. This Spirit equips us with the ability to grasp the depths of any matter, pulling together facts to form cohesive conclusions. It is fundamental for accurate diagnosis and helps us sequence events correctly, discerning what fits where.
Proverbs 24:3 states, “By wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established.” Similarly, 1 Chronicles 12:32 speaks of the sons of Issachar, who had “understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do.”
Once the Lord told me to have understanding, you have to stand under! I understood what He meant, that to learn you have to be willing to humble yourself. Acknowledge you don’t understand!
The Spirit of Understanding in Action
Throughout Jesus’s earthly ministry, He exhibited this Spirit of Understanding time and again. Take the story of the Rich Young Ruler, found in Matthew 19:16-22. A wealthy young man approaches Jesus, inquiring, “Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?” Confidently, he claims to have kept all the commandments since his youth.
However, Jesus, embodying the Spirit of Understanding, perceives beyond his outward compliance. He sees the young man’s attachment to wealth, which serves as a barrier to his spiritual journey. Jesus responds, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
This profound insight reveals the deeper issue at play: the young man’s wealth had become an idol, hindering his commitment to God. Despite his good intentions, he walks away sad, unable to let go of his material security.
A Call for Deeper Insight
For believers today, the Spirit of Understanding encourages us to look beyond the surface and grasp the deeper issues affecting our relationship with God. Just as Jesus discerned the young ruler’s heart, we too can be empowered to identify our own attachments and obstacles that may hinder our walk with Him.

Moreover, this Spirit guides us in ministering to others. Like Jesus, we are called to see beyond external appearances, addressing the true needs of those around us. This understanding enables us to offer compassionate support rather than superficial advice, focusing on the heart of the matter.
The Spirit of Understanding invites us into deeper self-awareness and genuine connections with others. By embracing this Spirit, we reflect the wisdom and love of Christ in our decisions, empowering ourselves and others to honor God in our lives.
The Equation of Understanding
The ability to summarize data and extract deep insights is crucial for addressing complex problems. This Spirit fosters order, enabling us to discern what needs to be done and when. I’ve distilled this idea into a simple equation:
Understanding = Order = Sequencing = Timing = Seizing Opportunities
We must continually seek to be filled afresh with the Spirit of Understanding.
Let us pray: Holy Spirit, we ask You, in the name of Jesus, to fill us with the power to understand. Grant us the humility to stand under Your guidance, so we may perceive what the Father and the Son are doing in our lives and in our world. Thank You for Your help, Holy Spirit. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
