Key Scripture: Isaiah 11:2 – The Spirit of Counsel

Empowered by the Spirit of Counsel
In exploring the significance of the Menorah, we discover its representation of the Seven Spirits of the Lord resting upon Jesus, as prophesied in Isaiah 11:2. The term “Menorah” translates to “lampstand,” but its Hebrew roots reveal deeper meanings: Min: out of, before, or in the face of.
Or: Light. Ner: lamp Nahar: flow or stream Nahara: daylight or light. Together, these elements create a beautiful expression: “Out of this lamp flows a pure light, like daylight, by which we behold His face.” This imagery beautifully illustrates how the Spirit of Counsel enlightens our knowledge of the Lord and His chosen paths for our lives.
Understanding the Spirit of Counsel
The Spirit of Counsel, or עֵצָה (êṣâ) in Hebrew, encompasses advice, plans, and prudence. It is the divine ability to articulate and envision purposeful actions. Proverbs 11:14 reminds us that “where there is no counsel, the people fall; but in the multitude of counselors, there is safety.” This wisdom speaks to the necessity of seeking guidance to avoid failure in our endeavors.
Without sound counsel, our plans can unravel. Proverbs 15:22 states, “Without counsel, plans go awry, but in the multitude of counselors, they are established.” Here, we see the importance of gathering wise advice to ensure success.
The Spirit of Counsel in the Life of Jesus
Jesus exemplified the Spirit of Counsel throughout His ministry, demonstrating clarity of purpose:
His Purpose: In John 18:37, Jesus affirms His mission: “For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth.” His clear understanding of His role reflects the Spirit of Counsel.
Calling of the Disciples: Jesus called His disciples not just to follow Him but to become “fishers of men” (Matthew 4:19). This was more than mere advice; it was a purposeful redirection toward a divine mission.
Jesus’ Mission: In Luke 4:18-19, He proclaims His purpose: “The Spirit of the Lord is on me… to proclaim good news to the poor.” This declaration aligns His actions with God’s divine plan, showcasing the Spirit of Counsel at work.
Counsel to Nicodemus: When Nicodemus sought understanding (John 3:1-21), Jesus provided profound counsel about spiritual rebirth, emphasizing belief in Him as the pathway to eternal life.
Counsel to the Woman at the Well: In John 4:1-26, Jesus engaged a Samaritan woman, guiding her to true worship and offering her “living water.” His counsel addressed her struggles and illuminated her understanding of the Messiah.
