The Spirit of the Fear of the Lord
Isaiah 11:2 – “The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord.”

The glorious Menorah, with its seven branches, is often seen as a symbol of the Burning Bush that Moses encountered on Mount Sinai. Just as the Burning Bush burned brightly yet was not consumed, the Menorah represents the eternal light of God’s presence. This connection highlights the Spirit of the Fear of the Lord, which instills awe and reverence for God in our lives.
The Encounter at the Burning Bush
When Moses approached the Burning Bush, God called him by name and instructed him to take off his shoes, as he stood on holy ground (Exodus 3:5). This life-altering encounter filled Moses with fear and respect, illustrating the transformative power of being in God’s presence. It is a reminder of how the Spirit of the Fear of the Lord works—instilling deep reverence for God’s holiness and authority.

The Spirit of the Fear of the Lord in Action
The seventh branch of the Menorah symbolizes the Spirit of the Fear of the Lord, emphasizing its vital role in the life of believers. The Hebrew word for this spirit is יִרְאָה (yir’ah), which encompasses moral uprightness, fear, respect, honor, and holiness. It reveals the kavod of God—His weightiness, heaviness, and worthiness.
An Egyptian pastor shared his experience with us at a meeting in Jerusalem. During the Six-Day War, when he and his fellow soldiers felt a profound fear as a gentle breeze swept through the desert. They believed the God of Israel had come to fight for His people, prompting many to surrender. This encounter led him on a quest to know God, culminating in his conversion and the establishment of a thriving church in Cairo (Psalm 111:10). Jesus and the Spirit of the Fear of the Lord
In the life of Jesus, the Spirit of the Fear of the Lord was evident. He walked through a hostile crowd in Nazareth unharmed (Luke 4:30) and caused the arresting mob to fall back when He declared, “I am he” (John 18:6). Even demons recognized His authority, manifesting fear when He taught in synagogues (Mark 1:23-26).
This spirit brings conviction, as seen in the story of the woman caught in adultery (John 8:1-11). Jesus, filled with grace and truth, revealed the weight of sin while offering forgiveness—a perfect demonstration of the Spirit of the Fear of the Lord in action.
The Impact on Believers
For believers, the Spirit of the Fear of the Lord cultivates an atmosphere of reverence and worship. It compels us to honor God genuinely, making us aware of His presence in our lives. This spirit influences how others perceive us, often causing them to adjust their behavior in our presence. It brings a sense of authority that makes demons tremble at our commands.
When Peter preached in Acts 2:37 , the bible remarked that people were cut to their hearts, and asked what they must do to be saved. This is the Spirit of the fear of the Lord in operation.
I think it is a component of the evangelistic anointing, that makes sinners repent and come to Christ.
Relevant scriptures that illustrate the impact of this spirit in the lives of believers include:
Proverbs 1:7: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.”
Proverbs 9:10: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.”
Psalm 34:9: “Fear the Lord, you His holy people, for those who fear Him lack nothing.”
2 Corinthians 7:1: “Therefore, since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God.”
In our daily lives, this spirit leads us to worship, serve, and honor God from our hearts. It produces a lifestyle marked by moral integrity and reverence for God’s commands. When we walk in this spirit, we embody the majesty and splendor of God, reflecting His light to the world around us.
Conclusion
The Spirit of the Fear of the Lord is essential for every believer. It is not just about being afraid but about understanding the profound respect and honor due to our Creator. As we embrace this spirit, we invite greater intimacy with God, allowing His glory to shine through us and impacting those around us for His Kingdom. Let us seek to walk in this spirit daily, cultivating a heart that honors and reveres the Lord in all we do.
Let us Pray: Father God, thank you for Your Holy Spirit and the 7 manifestations upon our Messiah Jesus Christ. Today, we have learnt about the Spirit of the Fear of the Lord.
