Empowered by the Spirit – 27

Key Text: 17 For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. NIV

Let’s dive deeper into the Fruit of the Spirit. Recently, several readers shared how impactful they found the statement: “Many believers struggle here, often forgetting that walking in the Spirit is a deliberate choice.” In response, I want to explore this struggle and clarify the intentionality required to live by the Spirit.

The Conflict Within Us
Galatians 5:16-18 (NKJV) reminds us:

16 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. 17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

The NIV says it a bit better “16 So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.  17 For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. NIV

This passage highlights a profound truth: the life of the flesh and the life of the Spirit are at war within us. The flesh desires what contradicts the Spirit, creating a tension that we must navigate daily.

Fleshly Actions
Consider the story of Jide, a father who had a long day at work. After a stressful meeting, he came home to find his teenage son playing video games instead of doing his homework. Frustrated, Jide snapped, yelling at his son and accusing him of being lazy. In that moment, he acted out of anger and disappointment, damaging their relationship and leaving his son feeling hurt and misunderstood.

Spirit-Led Actions
Now, let’s contrast Jide’s experience with that of Ama, a mother in a similar situation. After a challenging day, she returned home to find her daughter struggling with a difficult math assignment. Instead of reacting out of fatigue, Ama chose to walk in the Spirit. She took a deep breath, approached her daughter with empathy, and offered to help her with the assignment. This choice not only created a supportive environment but also strengthened their bond.

The Role of Our Will
The struggle between the flesh and the Spirit is real, but we have been given the gift of free will. God empowers us to make choices that align with His Spirit. As we yield to the Holy Spirit, we can resist the temptations of our fleshly desires. This choice is often challenging: it may cost our ego, require us to apologize, or prompt us to extend grace to someone we feel doesn’t deserve it.

I think the struggle emanates also from our misunderstanding of how God works in us. God will never force us to do anything. He will convince, convict, cajole, prompt, even restrain, but never will he force us. I often say “God’s sovereignty does not absolve man of responsibility.” God has His part and we have our part. The Holy Spirit is the Helper not the forcer!!!

There is always a way out!
1 Corinthians 10:13 offers us hope in this struggle:

13 No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.

This scripture reassures us that others face similar temptations, and God will not allow us to be tested beyond our capacity. Most importantly, He promises to always provides a way of escape. Always pause and ask for God’s way of escape!!!

Take the story of Ebuka, a college student who struggled with the temptation of cheating on a crucial exam. As the test date approached, he felt immense pressure from his peers to perform well. One night, he was in his dorm room, staring at his notes, overwhelmed and tempted to look for answers online. Just as he was about to give in, he remembered a verse he had learned in church about integrity and God’s faithfulness. He paused, prayed for strength, and decided to reach out to his mentor for guidance. That conversation not only provided him clarity but also reminded him that he was capable of succeeding without compromising his values.

Encouragement to Cultivate the Fruit
We are all susceptible to fleshly actions and reactions, but as we navigate the tension between our flesh and the Spirit, let us be intentional. Cultivating the fruit of the Spirit requires daily choices to walk in love, joy, peace, and the other qualities listed in Galatians 5:22-23.

Let’s remember that we are not alone in this struggle. With the Holy Spirit’s guidance, we can make choices that reflect God’s character, bringing glory to Him and blessing to those around us. May we all strive to cultivate the fruit of the Spirit, allowing it to flourish in our lives.

Let us Pray,

Heavenly Father, Thank You for the gift of Your Holy Spirit, who guides us in our daily choices. Help us to be intentional in walking in the Spirit, resisting the temptations of the flesh. Grant us the wisdom and strength to choose love, joy, peace, and all the fruits that reflect Your character.

May we recognize the struggles we face as opportunities to grow closer to You and to others. Empower us to make choices that honor You and bring healing to our relationships.

In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
