Grace to Repent

Morning Dew

Key Text: 2:4Don’t you see how wonderfully kind, tolerant, and patient God is with you? Does this mean nothing to you? Can’t you see that his kindness is intended to turn you from your sin? (New Living Translation).

One of the most amazing things about God is His love for the sinner and unregenerate. It almost sounds like an oxymoron, that the God who is Holy and Righteous will love sinners. Truth is no one can fully plumb the depths of God’s love and mercy, so no one fully understands this supposedly great contradiction. Yet God is not in a contradiction or conflict with Himself. He loves sinners. Period.

From my limited perspective, I think one of the reasons God loves sinners is based on the fact that He is the creator of mankind. As such He loves the sinner, but hates the sin of the sinner. This is the very reason, why today’s passage is key. The Kindness, patience and tolerance of God, wrapped up in His incredible love, makes Him work to lead sinners to repentance.

Honestly, sometimes when you hear messages on repentance, it almost sounds as if we are capable of repentance by ourselves. But this is not true. We need the grace of God to turn away from sin and walk in righteousness. If you are a believer in Jesus Christ, think back to the moment you believed. Was this based on your cast iron will alone? Was it based on your convictions? Was it not by God’s mercy and grace that you believed? Was it not somewhat mysterious that you had the faith to believe?

There is a verse of the bible that has often exercised my mind; I hope it blesses you too today. 2 Samuel 14:14

14 All of us must die eventually. Our lives are like water spilled out on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again. But God does not just sweep life away; instead, he devises ways to bring us back when we have been separated from him.

The ultimate testament to this powerful truth is the complex simplicity of the cross. That Jesus, the Son of God will become man and die for our sins and then rise from the dead. And as many as believe in Him, have their sins forgiven and elevated to the position of sons of God. This is the amazing grace of God.

Today if you are struggling in sin and want to change, its time to look to God for grace to repent. By the way repent means, Change your mind and then change your ways. God’s grace is available abundantly for you to change your mind and your ways. God has power to cleanse a man’s heart completely from sin and restore that person’s heart to righteousness. This is the mystery of His grace.

Let us Pray: Father God, what an amazing Father you are. Today, I need your help in my life so I can turn away from my sins and truly follow you. I want your grace to repent and change my direction in areas where I am out of line with you. I also pray today, that you would help me to see your kindness and mercy at work in my life, leading me away from sin to repentance. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.
