Empowered by the Spirit – 11

Living in the Power of God’s Exousia (Authority).

Key Text: They shall lay their hands on the sick and they will recover (Mark 16:15-18).

George Müller founded the Ashley Down orphanage in 19th century England, housing over 2,000 children. Remarkably, Müller refused to solicit funds, trusting solely in God’s “exousia” (divine authority) to provide for their daily needs through prayer. On countless occasions, Müller witnessed miraculous provision – from anonymous food deliveries to clothing donations – arriving just in time to feed the children. One morning, with empty plates before them, Müller simply prayed, and provisions soon arrived. Thousands of these children came to know Christ, a testament to Müller’s faith in God’s power to transform lives. His story inspires believers to fully surrender to the limitless authority of the Almighty.

Nicky Cruz, a violent New York gang leader, encountered the life-changing “exousia” (divine authority) of God through the ministry of David Wilkerson. After surrendering his life to Christ, Nicky began experiencing debilitating migraines and ailments, likely spiritual attacks. In desperation, he cried out to God for healing. Suddenly, during prayer, the Holy Spirit’s presence washed over Nicky, and the excruciating pain vanished – he was completely healed. This miraculous deliverance solidified Nicky’s faith, and he became a powerful evangelist, using his dramatic testimony to demonstrate the transformative “exousia” of the Almighty. Nicky’s story inspires believers to trust in God’s limitless authority to redeem even the most hardened of hearts.

As followers of Christ, we have been granted access to God’s “exousia,” or authority, through the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit. This profound truth carries significant implications for how we live our lives, transforming us into vessels of God’s power and purpose.

When we place our faith in Jesus, we receive more than just forgiveness and eternal life; we also become recipients of the Holy Spirit’s empowering presence. The Spirit of God resides within us, unleashing divine “exousia” that enables us to live victoriously.

The Authority Given to Believers

Authority Over Sin and Temptation: The Holy Spirit equips us with the power to overcome sinful desires and live in obedience to God. No longer slaves to our flesh, we are empowered to walk in the freedom of the Spirit (Romans 8:1-4).

Authority to Pray with Confidence: Through the Spirit, we gain boldness to approach God’s throne in prayer, making our requests known to the One who holds all authority (Ephesians 3:12, Hebrews 4:16).

Authority to Proclaim the Gospel: Empowered by the Spirit, we are emboldened to be witnesses of Christ, sharing the good news with power and conviction (Acts 1:8, 1 Thessalonians 1:5).

Authority to Resist the Devil: The Holy Spirit provides us with spiritual armour, enabling us to stand firm against the enemy and exercise authority over demonic forces (Ephesians 6:10-18, James 4:7).

Authority Over Sickness and Disease: Jesus said these signs shall follow those who believe. In my name they will lay their hands on the sick and they will recover. We have authority to heal the sick (Mark 16:15-18).

Authority to Exercise Spiritual Gifts: The Spirit distributes various gifts, empowering believers to minister effectively and build up the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:4-11, Romans 12:6-8).

Authority to Live in Victory and Transformation: As we yield to the Spirit, He transforms us into the image of Christ, granting us victory over our fleshly nature and empowering us to live according to God’s will (2 Corinthians 3:18, Galatians 5:16-25).

Walking in God’s Authority

At the heart of this “exousia” is the awe-inspiring truth that the all-powerful God of the universe has chosen to dwell within us through the Holy Spirit. As we walk in humble dependence on the Spirit’s leading, we have access to the very authority of God, enabling us to live as overcomers and witnesses of His kingdom.

Practical Implications of “Exousia”

  • Submit to God’s Authority: Recognize God’s sovereignty and submit wholeheartedly to His will and commands.
  • Exercise Authority Responsibly: Steward any authority or influence God grants us with faithfulness, knowing we will give an account to Him.
  • Rest in God’s Ability: Trust in God’s power to accomplish His purposes, confident that He will act in His perfect timing.
  • Live with Accountability: Let the reality of God’s authority motivate us to live with integrity and holiness.

By embracing God’s authority, we live in the power of the Spirit, fulfilling our incredible privilege and responsibility as followers of Christ. This leads to lives of deeper surrender, greater faith, and unwavering obedience, all for the glory of God and the advancement of His purposes.

Let us Pray: Our Father in heaven, grant us the faith to trust in your delegated authority in our lives. Help us to humbly serve the world by demonstrating your glory and power. Teach us to trust You more. In Jesus name we pray. Amen
